NB: You can also play this tab with a capo on the second fret if you wish
(as it is played on the Live DVD) changing the chords from:
A->G, D->C and E->D. However, those without a capo, and those wishing
to obtain a fuller sound for the chords may prefer to play it this way.
Thanks to Scott for pointing out the capo position.

Intro: A | D | A | E | A | D | A | E | A

A D
He was just a little farm lad, so busy at play
         A E
With his little play mate outside the gate.
         A D
Well, he stopped to watch a truck that was parking next door
       A E A
At the home of his tiny play mate.

E A
Then he saw his Daddy watchin' too
                          D E
As the men swiftly walked to the Carter's door.
   A D
He knew they were strangers that came from the town,
A E A
Men he had never seen before.

Fiddle solo: A | D | A | E | A | D | A | E | A

A D
They soon went to work when he heard his Daddy say
     A E
"Our neighbours are moving today."
 A D
"Oh no!" he cried, "dear God, don't let it be!
     A E A
They can't take my sweetheart away!"

 E A
"I know Dad you don't understand
                     D E
How a heart so young could conceive a plan.
    A D
I'm only seven now, but it's just like you say,
A E A
Daddy, some day I'll be a man."

Dobro solo: A | D | A | E | A | D | A | E | A

 A D
"The man who owns the farm where your play mates do live,
   A E
He told me it'd have to be this way.
    A D
For winter time has come, and the work is all done,
       A E A
That's why they are moving today."

 E A
"Let us buy the farm so they can stay!
                          D E
And give him all the toys that dear Santa gave!
    A D
And give him all my pennies in my little piggy bank!
A E A
Pennies that my darlin' helped me save."

Outro: A | D | A | E | A

Great song but it is actually played capoed 2nd fret in G. G C D. Those are the chords.
Try that it will work much better.
Keep playing
Scott

Thank you for your comment, Scott. Indeed on the Live DVD it is played with a capo on fret two. However, I think it is much simpler this way, and you also get a fuller sound. I will, though, add a note to the tab for those with a capo available to them.
