Chris Knight rules...Aaron

North Dakota
By Chris Knight

Capo 1

Em G D Am Em G D

(Em)Been snowin all day when(G)I got home
The(D)fire was out the(Am)cabin was cold
And I(Em)poured some stale(G)coffee from the(D)pot
The(Em)longer I waited the(G)snow got higher
So I(D)split some wood and(Am)built a fire
If she(Em)told me she’d be(G)gone I(D)forgot

I’d seen it snow that hard before
I couldn’t see the cabin from the stable door
And that mare she always rode was in the stall
The law couldn’t come till the weather broke
My heart was poundin in my throat
And I searched and called her name till it was raw

I never should have brought her here
Livin’s rough this time of year
Tryin to keep food and fire till winters done
Sometimes she gazed across the plains
With a look that I couldn’t name
And I’d wonder if she stay till springtime comes

I found her on the first warm day
The rain had washed the snow away
Went for wood and lost her way back home
And I ain’t the kind believes in ghosts
But some nights I get pretty close
When the North Dakota winter moans
When the North Dakota winter moans

-dixietruck | 1/26/2006
guys, its capo on the sixth chord.....c'mon now....get it right
-ReddirtRebal | 5/8/2010
I believe that it is capo'd 6th fret and the chord progression goes, Am C Dm ? Am C G. Not completely sure what the fourth chord in the progression is, but it kinda sounds like Em7.

Here’s what I got after watching the new video from Steamboat.

Capo is without a doubt on the 6th fret, at least in this performance.

Simplified:

Am - G - C sus2/D - Am - F (add 2 if you like)

Am - C - G

Remember these are ‘postion names' and not the actual chord names.

Don’t freak out on the Csus. It’s just the first finger in Am position on the G string with all other strings open.

For the guy who asked, try this:

Am (hammer ring finger) - G (hammer A string) - C sus2/D (hammer to the Am) - Am - F (hammer the G string second fret)

Am (hammer ring finger) - C (hammer middle finger) - G (hammer first finger second string first fret on your way out)

Repeat.

That’s the best I can do.

The actual transposed chords I believe are > D# - C# - (ghost F#sus2) D# - B then
D# - F# - C#

F Chord > x x 3 2 1 x > hammer on G string

C sus etc. > x x 0 0 1 x > hammer to Am
-claytrell | 1/24/2011
After playing this a while I’ve decided the C sus is probably an Em#5 which is just > x x 2 0 1 x
-claytrell | 1/25/2011

In this video the capo is on the 6th fret because he’s slack tuned.

In the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GX8hGmR00E he's capo'd on the 6th fret but tuned a half step down. You can do the same thing by capoing at the 5th fret in standard tuning. The chords are Am, C, F7, Am, C, G. He pulls off the 2nd fret A on the G string (Relative to position) in the Am chord, then hammers onto the second fret E on the D string in the C chord. In the F7 he hammers onto the 2nd fret A on the G string leaving the D string open, then hammers on the third fret F on the D string making it sound like he's playing two different chords, but he's just changing the bass note. He then hammers onto the second Fret A on the G string.. The Am,C, G is pretty self explanatory, hammer on the both the E and the A on the second frets of the D and G strings respectively, then hammer on the second Fret E on the D string in the C Chord. In the G I hammer on the 2nd fret B on the A string just to give it a little more country sound, then hammer on the 1st fret C on the B string, then pull off. Play with the song til you get the rhythm and timing down tight... Enjoy!
