Darryl Worley
from: Have You Forgotten?
written by: Darryl Worley, Wynn Varble, Don Poythress
A (F)mist halos the (C)meadow
And a (F)soft wind breathes a (C)whisper through the (G)trees
As I (F)lean against a (C)hickory
I (F)close my eyes and (C)I can almost (G)see
The (Am)ghostly forms of (G)blue and gray
(C)And I can almost hear the cannons (F)blast
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
The (F)first few waves came (C)cheerin'
(F)Fear and hatered (C)runnin' through their (G)blood
When the (F)day was finally (C)over
Those (F)left were wadin' (C)through a crimson (G)flood
To (Am)think I could be (G)right here
In the (C)spot where some young soldier breathed his (F)last
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
(F)Brother fightin; (C)brother
(F)Father fightin' (C)son
By the (F)time the sun was (C)settin'
Looked (Am)like the South had (C)won
Now my (F)mouth's as dry as (C)cotton
And my (F)heart is beatin' (Am)fast
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
(C)Sunrise (F)caught the rebels (C)sleepin'
And they (F)woke to hear a (C)Yankee bugle (G)blow
Bullets (F)flew like angry (C)hornets
Till the (F)peach tree blossoms (C)drifted down like (G)snow
(Am)It must have been like (G)hell on earth
(C)What happened here is more than we can (F)grasp
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
(F)Brother fightin' (C)brother
(F)Father fightin' (C)son
By the (F)time the smoke had (C)lifted
They (Am)knew the North had (C)won
(F)Lord my soul feels (C)empty
As my (F)tears fall on this (Am)grass
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
(F)Brother killin' (C)brother
(F)Father slayin' (C)son
From the (F)looks of this old (C)graveyard
Hell (Am)nobody really (C)won
(F)Somethins' changed (C)inside me
It (F)sure can happen (Am)fast
(Dm)Standin' in the (G)presence of the (C)past
A (F)mist halos the (C)meadow
And a (F)soft wind breathes a (C)whisper through the (G)trees

The best song on the CD. I hope it gets air time on the radio. -gwk44 | 5/6/2003 | I think Darryl is one of the best writers in the business. And I don't believe he gets the credit he deserves. -P.A.LinZ | 5/27/2003 | Don't know why this wasn't on his playlist last year at the New River Valley Fair (Va.). It's one of his best.
I like to play C with an F added to the high E string (Chord must have a name, but I don't know it.), instead of F chord, and also hit a G7sus lick before the G7, during the verses. -virginiagent | 6/12/2004 | This is the most powerful song I have ever heard. This album came out at the time I was taking a history course about the Civil War. The song is true to that history. I think Darryl must be a history buff also... -nickdanjer | 10/31/2004 | Yeah, it also helps that he lives within just a few minutes from Shiloh. You ought to see that place in the spring when the trees are blooming. -P.A.LinZ | 11/8/2004 | -fwl1982 | 2/16/2006 |
