Intro:

Em C G D Em C G D C

Verse 1

      G C
Got a guitar
      G C
Got a guitar on my back
        Em D C G C
And I'm standin' on this lonesome railroad track
          G C
Train's a comin'
      G C
It'll be here 'fore too long
      Em D C G
But I don't think I can stop it with a song
            Am7 C G
Girl that's kind of the way I'm feelin'
Am7 C
Tryin' to stop your leavin'

Verse 2

      G C
Got a pebble
      G C
Got a pebble in my hand
      Em D C G C
And I toss it out into the middle of the Rio Grande
                    G C
But the river keeps runnin'
           G C
Don't even know that I'm around
        Em D C G
I could throw in a million more and not slow it down
            Am7 C G
Girl that's kind of the way I'm feelin'
Am7 C Em C
Tryin' to stop your leavin'

Bridge

G D Em C
There's nothin' that I wouldn't try
G D C
If I thought it would change your mind

Verse 3

              G C
But you don't love me
             G C
No you don't love me anymore
      Em D C G
And I know as soon as you walk out that door
          G C
Train's a comin'
        G C
river's runnin'
          G C
Train's a comin', river's runnin'
         G C
Pain's a comin', tears are runnin'
            Am7 C G
Yeah that's kind of the way I'm feelin'
        Am7 C Em C G D
Knowin' I couldn't stop your leavin'

I suppose you can play anything you like. Your Em7 works because the main vocal is singing a D note and the harmony vocal is singing a G. Both of those notes are in a Em7. But the recorded version of this song is using an Am7 in that spot.
