as follows:

A change to G = 320003 D change to C = x32010

G change to F = 133211 F#m change to Em = 022000

E change to D = xx0232

***********************************************************************

A
Today he's past 18,

He's waiting for the bus in his army greens.
    D
Sat down in a booth at a cafe there,
         A
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair.

He's a little shy so she gave him a smile,

And he said "Would you mind sitting down for a while,
    D A
And talking to me, I'm feeling a little low."
              G D A
She said "I'm off in an hour, and I know where we can go."

        A
So they went down and they sat on the pier,

He said "I bet you've got a boyfriend, but I don't care,
     D A
I've got no-one to send a letter to.
          G D A
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you?"

F#m E D A
How I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy,

Too young for him they told her,
E
Waiting for the love of a travelling soldier.
F#m E
Our love will never end,
D A
Waiting for the soldier to come back again,

Never more to be alone,
       E A
When a letter says a soldier's coming home.

       A
So the letters came from an army camp in California,
                     D
Then Vietnam, and he told her of his heart,
                      A
It might be love, and all of the things he was so scared of.

He said "When it's gettin' kinda rough over here,

I think of that day sittin' down at the pier,
      D A
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile.
      G D A
Don't worry, but I won't be able to write for a while."

F#m E D A
How I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy.

Too young for him they told her,
E
Waiting for the love of a travelling soldier.
F#m E
Our love will never end,
D A
Waiting for the soldier to come back again.

Never more to be alone,
         E A
When the letter says a soldier's coming home.

A D A D A G D A
INSTRUMENTAL

    A
One Friday night at a football game,

The Lord's Prayer said, and the anthem sang,
  D
A man said "Folks, would you bow your heads,
      A
For a list of local Vietnam dead."

Crying all alone under the stands,

Was the Piccolo player and the marching band,
    D A
And one name ready, and nobody really cares,
      G D A
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair.

F# E D A
How I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy.

Too young for him they told her,
E
Waiting for the love of a travelling soldier.
F#m E
Our love will never end,
D A
Waiting for the soldier to come back again.

Never more to be alone,
         E A D A
When the letter says the soldier's coming home.

I saw the video today and i noticed that Natalie had a capo on the
second fret does anyone have a correction for this (I'm a
beginner)?
-chuck | 1/6/2003
OK....check up the top of the tab...I've put the chords there for
capo 2nd fret too. :o)
-axehappy | 1/7/2003
I watched the video and natalie is using the capo on 2nd fret and
also i noticed that when she changed for the f chord this is how she
did it,xx3233 I tried this and it sounds good and is also easier to
make than the 133211 f version ,i may be wrong ,but think i'm pretty
close on this one. anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

i usally keep the chords the same even if i use a capo...so i don't
think it matters other you change your chords or not.

Bruce Robison - original singer/songwriter of "Travelin' Soldier"
and brother-in-law of Emily Robison - plays the song with a capo on
the 4th fret; plays a modified G chord; C9; Asus; Em7 with some walk-
downs...finger-picking all the way. Saw him in concert, picked it
up immediately so I have never tabbed it before.
-tdean95 | 2/3/2003
Bruce ROBISON is the HUSBAND
of Emily ROBISON
-WacoKid | 2/3/2003
OOPS!

Charlie Robison is the husband
of Emily

that dude was right

"Now i feel stupid"
he he he he
-WacoKid | 2/3/2003
Though there were a few errors in the words, overall this is a great
tab. The version with the capo is near perfect. Thanks axe, this is
the best song out of Nashville for a while.

-stefaniep | 2/10/2003
thanks axe you've done it again.good job on the tabs fort a great
tune. relic
-relic | 2/18/2003
the chords are great but the lyrics aren't the best.
i'm looking at the paper that came with the cd and
the chorus starts with...

i cried

not

how i cried

the chords are darn near perfect from what i can see

-phantom_ryder11 | 2/25/2003
This really has nothing to do with this song...I just have a question
that prolly will sound pretty stupid but if anyone could anwser this
THANKS ALOT! Im a beginner but how can you tell whether to play a
major chord or minor. Ex. if it just says D???
-jlc | 3/9/2003
D is a major chord....if it was a minor, it
would say Dm
-axehappy | 3/9/2003
axehappy thanks alot!
-jlc | 3/11/2003
Let me toss this out there... the lyrics are EXACT to a version I
found on the net. This made me really happy (did I also mention its
in the correct key without the capo in this recording as well?)
-bbarker | 3/13/2003
great tab thanks alot.
-tonywoz | 4/6/2003
hello, I really like this song, too. And I think the chords are about
ok but I desperately need some advice for the picking since I can't
do it by listening to the song.
-gunkel | 5/26/2003
Easy F#m=
E-0
B-3
G-2
D-2
A-0
E-0
-Country fella | 9/22/2003
the song looks good and sounds good
who cares if the lyrics aren't ALL there
its a good tune and open to your own iterpatation. Good Job:)
-snach | 10/12/2003
I've watched the video over and over and have come up with the following that Natalie plays: Capo on 2nd fret and change axe's chords without the capo to:

A change to Gadd9= 320033
G change to ?????= xx3233
E change to D = x32010
D change to Cadd9 = 032033
F#m change to Em = 022000

Axehappy's sounds better but the above is how Natalie plays it in her video. It's also easier to play for us newbies. Thanks again Axe!! Great work!!

-trevnange | 11/9/2003
ok the f#m that was posted on the comments is wrong

F#m is xx4222

and in the song where it goes from F#m to E it doesn't
-314 | 1/11/2004
The lyrics are wrong...

One the chorus it's "I cried" and the first line is "Three days past eighteen"

-jaelynn | 1/29/2004
Hi,

Does anybody know the tabs for the hammers and pull-offs for the base notes and the little riffs in this song?

Thanks
ROC
-rocware1 | 3/9/2004
just thought you all should know, the first words of this song are "two days past eighteen" ect ect.
-Kasey Lee | 10/4/2004
I really like the way the Dixie Chicks put their instrumentals together with their vocal talents, I think Travelin' Soldier is one of their better songs and hope to hear much more from them.

-Donjuan69692001 | 1/23/2005
there should be a version for capo 2, with the whole thing shown instead of this one , easier to read
-cruzan_rum | 2/18/2005
Good work you just need to up grade the words to the right ones
-Canowindra_Chic | 3/28/2005
Does anyone know how to change that f#m to something easier to go from f#m-E?? ...this song will go down in country music history if it already hasnt... they perform this song beautiful on their "live" its awesome...
-laura123 | 7/9/2005
where does it show you the strumming pattern, or can someone tell me what it is please!?
-jordan_renee | 10/15/2015
