It depends on which album you listen to. Mine he does it in "G" -Blood4Money | 1/24/2004 |
Sounds Good to Me ;) But yea it could all depend on which record is being listened to.

this is totally wrong the chords are g c d -khaymain | 3/7/2004 |
This key works if you use a capo on the third fret. ;) -bandit2280 | 8/6/2004 |
Yeah, my recording's also in the key of G. But you can easily play these chords with the capo on the 3rd fret. -debeck | 8/15/2004 |
to stay true to the song this is best done in G without a capo -eflow116 | 2/12/2005 |
definitely E A B7, no doubt about it with the deep voice you can play it no other way-burn -joeyatfsu | 5/26/2005 |

I have Hanks Songbook right in front of me and it is E A B7. Probably does play it multiple ways but this is the way it was transcribed to his songbook! DRINK LOTS OF WHISKEY! -ascarla | 2/19/2006 |
This song was originally recorded in G, no matter what any song/tab book says. He has played it live in E and probably other keys as well, but the recorded version as heard on the Whiskey Bent & Hellbound Album was in the key of G. An interview with Hank revealed that he originally wrote this song with his guitar tuned to Open G tuning. You can play it in whatever key you want to, but just to settle the agrument, the original recorded version was in the key of G. -Mjagg | 3/27/2009 |
E or G it doesn't really matter -- that is why we have different chords and keys And that is all I have to say about that. -Buckaru2 | 2/3/2010 |
when i play this song i play it with the capo on the third and use these same chords.. i think it sounds great.. but thats all opinion.. -geetarmon | 6/2/2010 |
If you put your capo on the 3rd fret you just put your guitar in the key of G, so E A B works. No capo, G C D , it's all the same. Learn some basic music theory. -Wyattblackwood | 1/10/2015 |
