***********************************************************************

D
Ten years ago on a cold dark night,
A G D
Someone was killed 'neath the town hall lights.

There were few at the scene, but they all agreed,
         A G D
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me.

        G D G D
Now she walks these hills, in a long black veil.
    G D G D
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
              G D G A D
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

The scaffold was high, eternity near,
A G D
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear.

But sometimes at night, when the cold wind moans,
     A G D
In a long black veil, she cries o'er my bones.

        G D G D
Now she walks these hills, in a long black veil.
    G D G D
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
              G D G A D
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

The judge said "Son, what is your alibi?
            A G D
If you were somewhere else then you won't have to die."

I spoke not a word, though it meant my life,
    A G D
I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife.

        G D G D
Now she walks these hills, in a long black veil.
    G D G D
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
              G D G A D
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
              G D G A D
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

I like this version better i think its closer to the bands version. Cash did the song lower to suit his voice i think

there's a guy named stoney larue, and he's a hard ass, he sings this song better than anyone ive ever heard sing it. check him out if you get a chance
-CrossCanadianTX | 8/22/2004
He does sing it in G.
There's 2 recordings that I have with him
singing it in G. One of them is a duet with
someone and there's an awesome guitar solo
in it.

Stoney definitely sings it the best of anybody I've ever heard. If you want to check out a live bootleg mp3 of it for free go to www.reddirtscene.com. It's bad ass, he sings the hell out of it, the guitar is pretty damn good too.
