Their flag to April's breeze (A) unfurled;
Here (D) once the embattled (G) farmers (D) stood;
And (E7) fired the shot heard round the (A) world.

The (D) foe long since (G) in silence (D) slept;
Alike the conqueror silent (A) sleeps,
And (D) Time the ruined (G) bridge has (D) swept
Down (E7) the dark stream that seaward (A)creeps.

On (D) this green bank, (G) by this soft (D) stream,
We set to-day a votive (A) stone on,
That (D) memory may (G) their deeds (D)redeem,
When, like our sires, (A) our sons are (D)gone.

O (G) Thou who made those heroes (D) dare
To die, and leave their children (A) free, --
Bide (D) Time and (G) Nature gently (D) spare
The shaft we raised to (A) them and (D)Thee.
