My brother, and I were five and ten years old

We were headed for Uncle Grovers for a haircut

Not to "walk on plowed ground," we were told
                                  A      D
But it was much shorter, so we took the shortcut

Spring rains had made the plowed ground like muck

Before you knowed it, little brother and I were stuck

So scary, we thought we were in quick-sand

Then came Dad, in hip boots, to lend us a hand

He carried us out,

One under each arm

Said he had heard our mournful shout

Rescued us, saving us from harm

My brother, and I, we cleaned off the mud without a sound,

Looked at each other, and knew

We would never, ever, again cut across plowed ground.

We would walk to Uncle Grovers,

But not "over plowed-ground"
