Song: Wagon Wheel
Artist: Old Crow Medicine Show
Album: O.C.M.S.

This is a great song by a great young band with that old time stringband sound.
The song is real simple to play.
It just has two patterns that alternate all throughout the song.

CAPO 2

Intro:
G, D, Em, C
G, D, C (2x)

Verse 1

G D
Headed down south to the land of the pines
        Em C
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
G
Starin' up the road
    D C
And pray to God I see headlights

  G D
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Em C
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
          G
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
      D C
I can see my baby tonight

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

Verse 2

G D
Runnin' from the cold up in New England
      Em C
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband
   G D
My baby plays the guitar
               C
I pick a banjo now

        G D
Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin' me now
        Em C
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
      G
But I ain't a turnin' back
   D C
To livin' that old life no more

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

Verse 3 (just strum once for the first part of the verse)

G D
Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
           Em
I caught a trucker out of Philly
      C
Had a nice long toke
    G D
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
   C
To Johnson City, Tennessee

      G D
And I gotta get a move on fit for the sun
          Em
I hear my baby callin' my name
      C
And I know that she's the only one
    G
And if I die in Raleigh
   D C
At least I will die free

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

Hey this song rocks, but I'm playing along with it and it sounds like its tuned on a different key can you guys tell me if it is or isn't. I'm playing it tuned a half step down.
-IhuizzyI | 8/15/2004
These guys are pretty frickin good....I just bought their CD the other day and it is a good listen...nice tab too...everything sounds good and it is really easy to learn and pick up the progressions...

And to the person who posted before me....put a capo on the third fret...that should do the trick...the song is not meant to be played a half step down...it is meant ot be played with a capo on the 2nd fret, so with a guitar tuned doown, the capo goes on the third fret (putting the capo on the first fret brings it back to standard tuning)...

Thanks soona63 sounds muchmuch better.

Is this a bob dylan song?

-big jp | 1/21/2005
I saw these guys in December and they are awesome. This kind of music is fading fast and a young group of guys like this are quite rare. Great group and great song.
PS-I would really like to know how they came up with the name for th eband, sounds like one helluva story.
-bbowes | 1/28/2005
This is a good tab, and the song sounds fantastic on the mandolin.
-osheabpc | 2/10/2005
Thanks for Wagon Wheel - one thing; believe it's "Hopin' to Riley" / Expression used instead of "Hell" as in "Hopin' to Hell" These guys use the banjo and the 6 string banjo. Peace!
-luxussi | 3/22/2005
good job man. I just found out about this band and im hooked

-moorehead | 4/13/2005
you can also play it A, E, Em*, D, and then A, E, D. this is if u wana play w/o the capo.

*play the Em by barring on the second fret, and using ur 3rd and 4th fingers on the D and A strings i think the chord is a F#
-rebelpicker22 | 4/16/2005
bob dylan origanally started writing this song, but never finished it. then these guys finished it, and it is a great tune

You should check out the original Bob Dylan Version of the song.
-HaulinOates | 1/10/2011
Down home, good music. Wish their version would have gotten more mainstream play.
