Her brothers would climb on the bus
And she would beg to go
She would fight and fuss
That she was left alone
First day of school, pigtails and tears
All she learned is she didn’t want to be here
So she cried, Mama can I come home?
And mama said

Girl, I raised you I know you’re strong
You need to stay where you belong
I know that you can work it out
That’s what life is all about

She wanted to grow up fast
Couldn’t wait to be free
Though it couldn’t last
She thought it could be
She was young and didn’t know fear
All she learned is she didn’t want to be here
So she cried, Mama, can I come home?
And mama said

Through fights with her man
Kids driving her mad
A life she didn’t plan
She remembers what mama said
