INTRO
D(2) Bm(2) G(3) A(2) D(2) Bm(2) G(1) A(1) G(1) D(2)

D Bm
First of the month brings back the notion
      G A
Of a big round white dancehall in the cool summer night.
 D Bm
Red cherrub faces set black shoes in motion
        G A
To the om pa pa rhythm of a German delight.

         Bm A
- And I tried hard to tell you I was no kinda dancer.
 D D/C# E
Takin' my hand to prove I was wrong.
      D Bm
You guided me gently though I thought I could never.
          G A G D
We were dancin' together at the end of the song. -

   D Bm
A tot little baldman, like a German war hero
       G A
Would box some old matrons to a quick Jon Paul Jones.
 D Bm
Drapes of crate paper, the ball made of mirror,
       G A
Cast shiney reflections on a brass slide trombone.

         Bm A
- And I tried hard to tell you I was no kinda dancer.
 D D/C# E
Takin' my hand to prove I was wrong.
      D Bm
You guided me gently though I thought I could never.
          G A G D
We were dancin' together at the end of the song. -

- BREAK-
D(2) Bm(2) G(1) A(1) G(1) D(2)

     D Bm
The man was still danin' with his fan of partner
            G A
Though the band had quit playin' at the evening's end.
    D Bm
It made me feel lucky that I had a partner
     G A
To teach me the dancesteps and come back again.

         Bm A
- And I tried hard to tell you I was no kinda dancer.
 D D/C# E
Takin' my hand to prove I was wrong.
      D Bm
You guided me gently though I thought I could never.
          G A G D
We were dancin' together at the end of the song.
       Bm A
And I tried hard to tell you - - -
 D D/C# E
Takin' my hand to prove I was wrong.

You guided me gently though I thought I could never.

We were dancin' together at the end of the song. -

Thanks for the tab. I couldn't find it anywhere else. There are a few lyrical mistakes ('phantom partner', 'crepe paper') but I can't thank you enough!

Good tab, got me real close. But to me, it sounds better if you capo at the 2nd fret and play it out of C. But the biggest change is that in the verse rather than transcribe the Bm direct to Am, play the Am with the D string open. Whatever chord that is is what is really in the song. Alternatively, you can keep in in the same key as shown here and not fret the D string with your middle finger in the Bm barre chord. You do start the chorus with the full Am or Bm chord (depending on key), and the walk down on "take my hand to prove" part is mostly right, expect you go back to the Am or Bm chord with the extra open note rather than the E as posted here or the D if you capo at 2. Hope this made some sense.
