Telephone Road--Rodney Crowell
written by Rodney Crowell
From the album THE HOUSTON KID
Thanks to Hank for the original chords; however, it was much too hard for this beginner,
and I think these chords also sound a tad better (the E sounded off to me...this D
sounds a lot better).

Capo II

INTRO: A D (4x)

A D
The rain came down like endless sheets of thunder
A D
Lightneing bolts split pine trees down to the roots
       F#m
In the shadow of the astrodome
        D
With a hurricane coming on strong
           F#m E-A-E
We used to hit the streets and go swimmin in our birthday suits

Skiin' in a bar ditch behind a mo-ped
13 stitches on the corner of a sardine can
We were dirt poor Houston kids
Our whole family livin on the skids
But we always had a nickel for the comin of the ice cream man

CHORUS 1:
D
Mosquito truck blowin up DDT
F#m
Barefoot heatens runnin wild and free
D
Air raid buzzer at a noonday scream
Bm E D
Livin is a dream on telephone road

I used to love them cherry cokes down at the Princess Drive-In
The cheeseburgers taste so good I like to come untied
There's a chinaberry tree I remember
I used to climb in and outta my winder
The night I left was on the day before my grandma died

CHORUS 2:

Sawdust spread out on a dancehall floor
Jukebox rippin at an all out roar
Barmaid smilin at a ten cent tip
Livin is a trip on telephone road

BRIDGE:
F#m B
Magnolia Garden bandstand on the very front row
F#m D
Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and the Killer puttin on a show
Bm D
Six years old and barely off my daddy's knee
             F#m E
WHen those rockabilly rebels sent the devil runnin right through me

CHORUS 3:

A drive in movie in the trunk of my car
One-eyed sailor in an ice house bar
Split Shine Charlie and ol' Peg Leg Bill
Are dressed up fit to kill on telephone road

          F#m A
Telephone Road
          D
Telephone road

F#m E
Barbeque and beer on ice
  F#m E
A salty watermelon slice
F#m E
A little taste of paradise
               D (let ring)
On Telephone Road

(NOTE)
Feel free to add in a Dsus4 after the D at the end of the verse lines...

Anal and petty I know, but as a Houstonian, it's "Prince's" drivethrough. And for the record, the Cherry Cokes are still one of those things you should experience before leaving this world. The burgers with the sauce..man..this song captures a place in time and spirit better than anything I've ever heard. Everything in here are things we actually used to do as kids.
