This is a great song by a great band. If you haven't already, go buy their album now. I got these lyrics off the album.
I will try to figure out the lead guitar riff played in the intro and throughout the song soon.
**EDIT**: Alright, I think I've got the main riff figured out. It sounds right to me, but it's hard to get that "echo-y" sound they have. It's kinda tricky
and it may be a little hard to understand via tabulature. If ya'll have any suggestions let me know.
Intro:
I'm using the "~" to denote that you let the note before it ring out while you hammer on or pull off on the other strings.
Letting the other note ring out while you hammer on and pull off is what gives this riff it's unique sound, in my opinion.
Capo 4th fret.

For beginners wanting an easy strumming pattern, strum down, down up, down, down up on each chord through the entire song.
Intro:
Em C G D/F# (x2)
Verse:
Em C
Way down south where the highland fades,
G D/F#
there's a poor man working in a rice field maze
Em C
And a barefoot boy on a jetty plank
G D/F#
as he walks into the gulf
And a lighthouse shining out to the sea,
to the shrimper staring in disbelief
at the mermaid saying he's got to believe
that light will take him home
Chorus:
C G
By the Mississippi River there's a southbound train
D/F# Am
and it's headed for the gulf.
C G
I'm gonna buy my ticket and hold it tight
D/F# Am
till I know I'm getting close
C G
You see me running down the alley way, looking for the jetties,
D/F# Am
searching for my soul
C G D/F
you know, ohhhhh
D/F Em C G D/F#
I'm headed for the coast
Em C G D/F#
Verse:
Too many young people trying to run their lives,
too many rich folks trying to change their minds
I'm tired of the hustle; get out of the bustle
every time I see the light
And tell me baby can you feel my soul?
I'm running to the rhythm on cruise control
I've got three chords and I speak the truth,
to Willie Nelson that's a country song
Chorus:
C G
By the Mississippi River there's a southbound train
D/F# Am
and it's headed for the gulf.
C G
I'm gonna buy my ticket and hold it tight
D/F# Am
till I know I'm getting close
C G
You see me running down the alley way, looking for the jetties,
D/F# Am
searching for my soul
C G D/F
you know, ohhhhh
D/F Em C G D/F#
I'm headed for the coast
