Descr i ption: Place middle finger on the third fret
 holding the e b strings. Now the rest is just
hammering on and off the G string on the 2nd, 4th, and
5th frets….like this:
-----|--------|---2----|-------|-------|------------
-----|--------|---2----|-------|-------|--------
-----|----1h--|--------|---3hp-|--4----|-------
-----|--------|--------|-------|-------|-------
-----|--------|--------|-------|-------|------
-----|--------|--------|-------|-------|-------
1=pointer finger
2=middle finger
3=ring finger
4=pinky
**strum down holding two position, hammer on with 1,
go to 3, back to 1, then to 4, 3, 1. The
whole time, fill in with strumming 2 position.
          (Position is relevant to fingers not frets.)
This is the way I play it. Hopefully you can understand it.
Listen to the song and you will pick up what I’m talking about
easily. I’m no expert guitarist, but I think this is a very
easy method especially when playing acoustic by yourself.

(play figure 1 throughout verses)
My names John Lee Petimore……
Same as my daddy and his daddy before….
You hardly ever saw granddaddy down here
Only come to town about twice a year
He’d buy a hundred lbs. of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
1st chorus:
  G                       C9          G
Now the revenue man wanted granddaddy bad
 D                    D(pull off hammer on w/ 1st finger) D
He headed up the holler with everything he had
   G                  C9         G
Its before my time but I’ve been told
D D(pull off hammer on with 1st finger)
He never came back from copperhead road

Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block dodge
Bought it at an auction at the masons lodge
Johnson county sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer never looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumbling sound

2nd chorus:
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin, knew something wasn’t right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin down copperhead road

I volunteered for the army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first round here that way
Done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
Id take the seed from Columbia and Mexico
Id plant it up the holler down copperhead road.

3rd chorus:
Well the DEA’s gotta chopper in the air
Wake up screamin like Im back over there
I learned a thing or two from Charlie don’t you know
You better stay away from copperhead road

Like I said this is my version, just wanted to post a different,
easier way of playing it. Feel free to critize…lol…that’s how
we learn.
STEVE EARLE IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!

this is pretty good, if you play it on electric w/ lots of distortion it sounds like the way JJ plays it from kevin fowler. fowler does a badass cover of this at every show ive seen

LOL if you like, I love this! I've been a mediocre guitarist for over 40years so this kind of "cheating" is great. You want LOL: hell man most of my covers are so far off they could pass for original materiel if only I sang as bad as I played!

The whole survey thing to upgrade memberships, has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen.
