The Mountain

Steve Earle with the Del McCory band

Capo 7 (simulates Mandolin)

Verse 1

G Em
I was born on this mountain a long time ago

G Am C Em
Before they knocked down the timber and strip-mined the coal

G Em
When you rose in the mornin' fore it was light

      G Am C Em D
To go down in that dark hole and come back up at night

Chorus
      G Em
I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home

G Am C D
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe

            G Em
Well, they took everything she gave, now they're gone

         G Am C G
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home

Verse 2

G Em
I was young on this mountain, but now I am old

      G Am C Em
And I knew every holler, every cool swimmin' hole

G Em
Till one night I lay down and woke up to find

        D Am C Em D
That my childhood was over and I went down in the mine

Chorus

Solo/instrumental break G Em G Am C Em G Em G Am C Em D

Verse 3

G Em
There's a hole in this mountain and it's dark and it's deep

     G Am C Em
And God only knows all the secrets it keeps

          G Em
There's a chill in the air only miners can feel

         G Am C Em D
There're ghosts in the tunnels that the company sealed

Chorus

Sounds good. I think there is supposed to be a G instead of a D when he says my childhood was over though.
