Love You Goodbye
Written by Tommy Douglas & Jamie O'Hara
Recorded by Tim McGraw

(Capo on 2)

Intro.: | (D) (A/D) (G/D) (D) | x times
(*The long tones of (D) chord would basically change as this pattern.)

He was (D)thinkin' back when he was a kid, his folks were divorced
His old man high on somethin', came knockin' at the door
His mama wouldn't (G) talk to him, she said boy don't you let him in (D)
She was (Em)cussin' and pacin' and (G) wastin' her life at li-(D)noleum floor

He took him (D)back to his old apartment, turned off the TV
His beautiful broken hero on the couch, passed out asleep
And he (G)put 'em to bed with tears in his eyes (D)
He said dad (Em) I love (G) you, goodbye (D)

He headed (D)out into the night, seventeen years old
Fired up that rusty old pickup, turned his collar to the cold
And he (G)headed back to mama's place, ready for his (D)big escape
And he (Em)tiptoed up the stairs and left a (G)note in the (D)cover's fold

It said mom (D)I wish I could wave a wand and make you smile again
Bring back the man who stole your heart 'fore the demons got to him
If I (G)stay here any longer, somethin' sacreds gonna die (D)
He said mom (Em) I love (G) you, goodbye (D)

Inst.: | (C) | (Bm) | (Em) | (G)

Took a (D)lot of wrong turns on the road, findin' his life
By the grace of God, he ended up with a little boy and a wife
And the phone (G) call came from his sister, it was that old familiar pain (D)
His (Em)mother was at the doorstep of (G)heaven's pure white light (D)

At the (D)end of the service, his father came up to him
Clear eyed and sober, now he said, "Boy, Jesus took my sins
And I (G)pray someday maybe you'll forgive me too"
With (D)tears in his eyes, he said, "Son, (Em) I love (G) you, Goodbye (D)

His (D)plane touched down in Texas, he pulled out his phone
Dialed in the number, got the machine of his old man's home
He said, "Dad, (G) we got an extra room, and your grandson has your (D)eyes"
Couldn't say (Em)anything else, (G) 'cause he (D)started to cry

(Tag)
And he choked out, (Em)"dad I love (G) you, Goodbye (D)
(Em)Dad I love (G) you, Goodbye

Outro.: | (D) (A/D) (G/D) (D) | x 2

Instead of the way it is listed in the diagram, play the G/D chord like so: xx0003 Easier to play and sounds just as good.
