As Good As I Once Was
written by by Keith/Emerick
from the album "Honkytonk University"
tabbed 5/18/05
There was a request, so I decided to post this. RBrockus's tab is dead-on;
however, I believe this is what the acoustic guitar player plays. Also, the
request was for a capo on II, which really screws things up; I posed those chords
at the bottom, as well as for a capo on I (which is pretty easy, like this one).
I also added a couple base-notes that I think help fill the song out.
CAPO III
INTRO: G A D D/F# D
VERSE 1:
G A
She said I seen you in here before
D
I said I been here a time or two
G A
She said Hello my name is Bobby Jo
D
Meet my twin sister Betty Lou
G A
And we're both feelin' kinda wild tonight
D
You're the only cowboy in this place
E
And if you're up for a rodeo
A N/C
I'll put a big Texas smile on your face...I said girls...
CHORUS 1:
G A
I ain't as good as I once was
D
I got a few years on me now
G A
But there was a time, back in my prime
D D/F# D
When I could really lay it down
G A
If you need some love tonight
D D/F#-Bm
Then I might have just enough
G A
I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once
G G/F#-G/B-D
As I ever was
INTRO
VERSE 2:
G A
I still hang out with my best friend Dave
D
I've known him since we were kids at school
G A
Last night he had a few shots, got in a tight spot
D
Hustlin' a game of pool
G A
With a couple of redneck boys
D
One great big fat biker man
E
I heard David yell across the room
A N/C
Hey buddy, how 'bout a helpin' hand...I said Dave....
CHORUS 2:
G A
I ain't as good as I once was
D
My how the years have flown
G A
But there was a time, back in my prime
D D/F# D
When I could really hold my own
G A
If you want to fight tonight
D D/F# Bm
Guess them boys don't look all that tough
G A
I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once
G G/F#-G/B-D
As I ever was
BRIDGE:
C G
I used to be hell on wheels
D
Back when I was a younger man
E
Now my body says you can't do this boy
A N/C
But my pride says oh yes you can...
CHORUS 3:
G A
I ain't as good as I once was
D
That's just the cold hard truth
G A
I still throw a few back, talk a little smack
D D/F# S
When I'm feelin' bullet proof
G A
So don't double-dog dare me now
D D/F# Bm
'Cause I might have to call your bluff
G A
I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once
G G/F#-G/B-D
As I ever was
G A

Really great tab. Could you just please show the D/F#-Bm and especially the G/F#. Thanks! -DJ_Smith | 5/18/2005 | No problem. The chord links will probably be up here pretty soon, but I'll go ahead and post those chords.
D/F#: 2x0232 G/F#: 220033
The hyphen in the D/F#-Bm just means that, as you sing that word, go from D/F# to Bm (x24432).
Hope that helps. -twizzle05 | 5/18/2005 | great job its agood song -peaceallover | 5/18/2005 | thats what i'm talkin about brother! -homer69 | 6/23/2005 | perfect. -wuzio | 6/28/2005 | good work guys......damn good song -angus65 | 6/28/2005 | great song. even my dad is playing it now. -malikk81 | 9/3/2005 | This is a great tab and a great tab thanks and keep them coming!!! -countchet | 9/27/2005 | This is a great song and a great tab thanks and keep them coming!!! -countchet | 9/27/2005 | Hey country friend , make a comment , Capo 1 and Capo 2 are the wrong titles.
Capo 1 should be G=G# A=A# D=D# E=F etc
-Chasedatunes | 12/13/2005 | The chords on the left are relative to THIS tab. You're right--a G with a capo on I is in fact a G# chord. However, the G I'm referring to is the G with the capo on III. This is actually a Bb chord. To play a Bb chord with a capo on I, you play an A. To play a Bb with a capo on II, you'd need to play a G#. -twizzle05 | 12/13/2005 | It sound just right! -verysmartguy | 1/20/2006 | There's just something that I can't stand about the G/F#. And I don't just mean in this song. I hate that chord. It sounds like a dying cat scatching a blackboard. OK, maybe not that bad, but I still don't like that chord.
Don't get me wrong. I am no way complaining about your work. You did great. I just can't stand that chord so I skip over it. -tpmadden | 4/28/2009 |
