The Devil and Me--Trick Pony
written by Dean/Staley
From the album "On a Mission"
I first heard this song live, before the album came out. Ira Dean, alone on the stage
with an acoustic guitar, his hat and sunglasses off, sitting on a stool, the lights
dimmed low...saying he'd promises his mother he wouldn't sing this song until he was
sober. One of my all-time favorite concert moments; there wasn't a dry eye there.
Needless to say, he got a couple standing ovations for it.
CAPO I
INTRO: D G D G
D A D A
I'm not the kind that gets around, just another face in this little town
G A
An everyday man trying to live life right
D A D A
You wouldn't know it to look at me, I live in silent misery
G A
Or I lead a double life
G A D
I've battled with the bottle all alone for years
G A
I've lied a thousand lies, and cried a million tears
CHORUS 1:
G A D
I'm too tired to fight it, and too ashamed to pray
A D
I know the Lord must be bored with the promises I've made
G D
So I sit here with my secret thinking no one else can see
G A D
And I'll just keep it between the devil and me
Monday morning here I am hiding bottles in a garbage can
I take out the trash and pray no one sees
I keep my family in the dark 'cause Lord knows it'd break their hearts
To see the rock be so weak
I've had a good old Baptist raising, so I've got no good excuse
I wish that I was stronger but here's the honest truth
CHORUS 1
BRIDGE:
G A D
I'm hoping for a miracle, I know that I can change
G A
No I'm not givin' up, I know there'll come a day, when
CHORUS 2:
I'm not too tired to fight it, or too ashamed to pray
And I know the Lord won't be bored with the promises I've made
I won't live here with my secret where no one else can see
No I won't keep it between the devil and me
No I won't keep it between the devil and me
