Intro: G C Em D/F# G

Verse 1:

 G C
I've been a waiter, a roofer, a clerk

     D G
I've shoveled manure, till my pride hurt

     G C
When your startin' out it's all part of the work

Em D/F# G
To do what I do

Verse 2:

 G C
I've been evicted, for not makin' rent

       D G
I made my daddy wonder where my good sense went

        G C
For the price of a dream, my years have been spent

Em D/F# G
To do what I do

Chorus:

     C
So I stand here tonight

          D
With this six string guitar

       G C
To be something I've always been in my heart

C D
Just for the chance to play you my song

     G C
The thrill when I hear you singing along

         Am C D
Has been worth everything I've been through

             G
To do what I do

Verse 3:

 G C
I've played for empty tables and chairs

     D
For drunks that don't listen

G
Crowds that don't care

G
Been told countless times

              C
Boy you ain't goin nowhere

Em D/F# G
To do what I do

Chorus 2:

     C D
So I hope the critics and skeptics alike

 G C
All bought a ticket to this show tonight

 C D
They'll see first hand that I have survived

 G C
What doesn't kill you makes you more alive

        Am C D
and I'm one of the fortunate few

             G
To do what I do

Verse 4:

 G C
There's so much joy, this music can bring

   D G
So I count my blessings when I step up to sing

              G C
Cause there's so many people that would give anything

Em D/F# G
To do what I do

            C D G
And I thank you, I can do what I do

Im not sure about the tab, thanks and i hope its accurate, but i wanted to comment on the song, Im sure some other aspiring songwriters like myself can appreciate the mans talent. Songs like this and Remember When will be timeless treasures.

you are weird, timeless treasures? he has alot of better songs than remember when!!! Maybe you should be a loyal fan and find the early stuff!!!
-willienelson64 | 4/30/2004
Look you /// he was using it (remember when) as a example, do you want ‘em to list every song by the man? And he has one up on you…he smart enough to figure out the chords and put them on here. All you are is a sh// disturber. Now if your not weird, go and do one better and be a true fan…put tab that is not on here, on here. Randy

I'm just starting out and appreciate everyone on this site for their help, but I thought I would tell you that according to Alan Jackson's website, oddly enough, he didn't write this song.
-scottspalding | 6/5/2004
I agree...I happen to thing "There you go" is a great song....but thats just me talking. But to call someone wierd because you do not like his words is pretty low.
-sailsman | 9/20/2004
