I just have a question about this tab. Instead of playing the open D string in the beginning, wouldn't it work just as well to play the A string on the 5th fret? It's the same note and you're already on the 5th fret of the A. Does it matter?

In my opinion you would want to play the open D string instead of just repeating the A string 5th fret note. An open string rings out differently so you could hear the difference between the two notes no doubt It would work, yes but it wouldnt sound as much 'like the lick' without using the open string for that part.
