Don't know who wrote it, but Peter, Paul & Mary recorded it as a folk tune.
Elvis did it in the concert movie "Aloha from Hawaii", and it's a nice rockabilly.
Easy and enjoyable to play, and a get up and dance tune.

(C)In the early mornin' (G)rain, (Dm)With a (G)dollar in my (C)hand
(C)And an aching in my (Dm)heart, (G)And my pockets full of (C)sand
(C)I'm a long ways from (Dm)home, (G)And I missed my loved one (C)so
(C)In the early mornin' (G)rain, (Dm)With (G)no place to (C)go

(C)Out on runway number (G)nine, (Dm)Big 70(G)7 set to (C)go
(C)Well I'm out here on the (Dm)grass, (G)Where the pavement never (C)grows
(C)Where the liquor tasted (Dm)good, (G)And the women were the (C)best
(C)There she goes my (G)friend, (Dm)She's (G)rolling out at (C)last

(C)Hear the mighty engines (G)roar, (Dm)See the (G)silver bird on (C)high
(C)She's away and westward (Dm)bound, (G)Far above the clouds she (C)flies
(C)Where the mornin' rain don't (Dm)fall, (G)And the sun always (C)shines
(C)She'll be flying over my (G)home, (Dm)In a(G)bout three hours (C)time

(C)This ol' airport's got me (G)down, (Dm)It's no (G)earthly good to (C)me
(C)'Cause I'm stuck here on the (Dm)ground, (G)Cold and drunk as I might (C)be
(C)Can't jump a jet (Dm)plane, (G)Like you can a freight (C)train
(C)So I best be on my (G)way, (Dm)In the (G)early mornin' (C)rain
(C)So I best be on my (Dm)way, (G)In the early mornin' (C)rain
(C)So I best be on my (Dm)way, (G)In the early mornin' (C)rain

Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song in 1976
he also sings it. Try the key of D major.
Chords in Gordons version are D A G6.
Thanks ralph1.
