Drive South
By John Hiatt
Written by John Hiatt
A
I didn't say we wouldn't hurt anymore
E
That's how you learn you just get burned
A
We don't have to feel like dirt anymore
E
Though love's not earned baby it's our turn
B
We were always looking for true love
A
With our heads in the clouds
Just a little off course
B
But I left that motor running
A
Now if you're feeling down and out
E
Come on baby drive south
A B
with the one you love
E
Come on baby drive south
A B
With the one you love
I'm not talking about retreating no sir
Gonna take our stand in this chevy van
Windows open on the rest of the world
Holding hands all the way to dixie land
We've been trying to turn our lives around
Since we were little kids
It's been wearing us down
Don't turn away now darling
Lets fire it up and wind it out
Chorus
A
I heard your momma calling
A
I think she was only stalling
E
Don't know who she's talking to
B
Baby me or you
A
We can go down with a smile on
Ain't going to pack my nylons
E
Just leave these legs showing
B
It gets hot down where were going
We were always looking for true love
With our heads in the clouds
Just a little off course
But I left that motor running
Now if you're feeling down and out
Chorus

Hey Lar - I appreciate you writing this one out for me - I noticed the one you wrote out here is the Suzy Boggus version, and I honestly don't remember if there are any musical differences between hers and John's besides the lyrics being changed a little on account of sex, but I have a CD with his version on it, and when I listen, I think I hear a "D" in this spot here:
A D A I didn't say we wouldn't hurt anymore E That's how you learn you just get burned
and so on...if you would, give it a try, and anyone else who feels so inclined, and let me know if I'm crazy or if it belongs there (and if their two versions are different...)
