If you really want the sound, then play the bass notes in an alternating 
patern, like in most of Johnny Cash's style songs. If you're unfamiliar, the 
bass notes are the 5th note on the circle, a step down though, as follows:

A:   E
D:   A
B7:  F
E:   A/E alternate

 you can figure it out, it's easier if you watch the video.
