kuddos -hollisboy | 4/25/2003 |
This is excellently accurate!!!!!!!!!!!! -ALp | 4/28/2003 |
this one is correct thanks -krummit | 5/24/2003 |
Everything's great excpt for this: instead of Am F G And you could have it all my empire of dirt
I thought it was
Am F C G And you could have it all my empire of dirt -sweet-afton23 | 6/1/2003 |
It slounds like the G should be played 320033 -HARDT0303 | 6/17/2003 |
Shantel, I've never seen one of your tabs that I didn't absolutely fall in love with. Excellent work. As long as you keep up work like this, I'll keep coming to this site. Thanks for the great tabs. -LynyrdSkynhead | 9/17/2003 |
The G he has it right. But in the beginning, the I believe the high E in the D chord is left open. -cheesmo | 10/8/2003 |
The D can be played as a ninth chord if you prefer. Fingering would be xx0230 -Shantel | 10/9/2003 |
is this song strummed or finger picked...I have tried to play it and can't get the right sound for the verses....if someone could fill me in it would be appreciated . *Smiles* -midnite | 10/22/2003 |
The verse is mostly picked. The chorus is all strumming. Check out some of the tab submissions for a good representation of how to play the verse part. They're all similar but I'd recommend the one by Gladiator or "Hurt 5" -Shantel | 10/22/2003 |
the D should be a Cadd2 -mikalhanna | 11/16/2003 |
The D is ------0--- ------3--- ------0--- ----4----- --5------- It is C up two frets. Not sure what it is called but is sounds better. -cbayne101 | 11/18/2003 |
ok for a fact the D chord is Dsus2 and how you play the verse is this
the Am is played the root note A on the 5th sring
then the next note is E on the 4th string then u finish the chord by struming the remainder
-acana007 | 12/31/2003 |
oh ya by the way look at the music video for the third chord -acana007 | 12/31/2003 |
Hey all,
I consulted the "Hurt" video and it looks like he's playing Dminor instead of just D. Can anyone confirm this? -Phoenix02 | 1/12/2004 |
I just wabted to say to who ever submited this : You did a Very Good Job, i have been playing for 4 years and just noe figured out how to pic this song. Johnny Cash a very taltnted man in his time we all loved him -txkidcrisp | 3/4/2004 |
This song sounds great if you get the picking correct. For the verse, the first 2 notes are picked separately, then the remaining notes in the cord are strummed together. For the chorus, it is all strummed.
I believe the correct chords are;
Verse C, X32010 Dsus2, XX0120 Am, X02210
Chorus G5, 320033 A7sus4, 002233 Fadd9, X03213 C, X32013
Also, make sure you use the proper dynamics for this song. It needs to start soft and build up. This is what Johnny Cash was so good at doing. -enjoy -cboland | 5/3/2004 |
I'm new to guitars but it's of my opinion that instead of Am, C, D...
You should go for Am, C, and then bring that C down to the third fret, with the last string pressed at the fifth. Just slide that sumb***h.
Great song, and great tabs. I'm glad I know the choral chords now. Thanks.
I'm a junior in high school and I just wanted to say that, in a generation of hip hop and pop, Johnny Cash has always been my favorite artist to defend.
"johnny cash was just some old white guy who can't sing good and was soft... "
response: "Cash once sang of killing a man in Reno just to watch him die.. and this is before people sagged around the asscrack and wore gold caps. That man was the first real original artist I can think of." -Joe
-smada | 9/17/2004 |
For the verses, he picks the 2 top strings of the chord and strums the last as shown here:
e------0|------0--|----2--| B------1|------1--|----3--| G------2|------0--|--2---2| D----2--|----2----|0------| A--0----|--3-----3|-------| E-------|---------|-------|
Note: as the chord changes, a note is picked just before the chord transition.
In the chorus: G:320033 Am:x02213 F:xx3213 C:X32013 Once he hits the F chord, you can hear a bass note played, and is heard throughout the rest of the chorus: like this: Am F C E--3-3-3-3|--3-3---3-3--|3 B--1-1-1-1|--1-1---1-1--|1 G--2-2-2-2|--2-2---2-2--|0 D--2-2-2-2|--3-3-3-3-3-3|2 A--0-0-0-0|------*-----*|3 E---------|-------------| Whathave I become My.... ** These are bass notes, which he picks between strums, and are heard sometimes throughout the chorus, and the further in, the more are played. In the outro, they can be picked after each strum. The D chord, figure it to be whatever, the high e string is played, ithink its d, because i havent tried dsus2 for this song. I have been playing this song for ages, and I always use d, but I know its know a barre chord. In the video as someone mentioned, they think its Dm. that tells you it might be D rather than Dsus2, because he has a finger on that string, and it doesnt sound Dm, so it ust be D. But in anyway, if Dsus2 is unfamiliar to anyone, Dsus2 looks a little something like this:
E--0 B--3 G--2 D--0 A--X E--X -macg1 | 10/7/2004 |
Great tab...just wanna say i think this was the best cover of a song ever. Trent Reznor is my favorite artist of all time, i'm a huge NIN fan (without the piercings and bullcrap lol)....when music worlds collide, great things happen....plz everybody remember that -joans00ex | 10/22/2004 |
Hey I was awefully happy you put this tab in, I luv this song and if I were you I wouldn't stress about all the different chords everyone is bringing up I think you did great and everyone is going to have different opinions. -caris | 12/28/2004 |
Thank you for your transcr i ption. I appreciate your hard work. -dorothycooley | 1/12/2005 |
its great to have the chords, it cracks me up how everyone is going on about this exact note etc, Cash did an incredible 'version' of this song.. because of the feeling he puts into his songs..he makes the songs his own..i think some perfectionists need to have a go at doing their own version of songs..make them their own..'share' them around..its what Johnny Cash was doing!. -Thornicroft | 1/19/2005 |
hey smada i think ure right i got in to it with a wigger of johnny cash im a freshman in high school -redneckpunk15 | 2/20/2005 |
jc is awsome 1 of the best ever great tab
-D minor | 4/24/2005 |
Thanks for the tab, really good, maybe keep playing C in some of the spots that you play F in the chorus. Other than that great stuff! Thanks -TravisKraft | 7/12/2008 |
The best version found yet, that actually conveys the pognancy of this song, sung so feelingly by Johnny Cash. Thank you :) -Astrololee | 5/26/2016 |
