The Delaney Place (A Dollar A Day)

(D) When I was a kid, we lived on the Delaney (G) Place
(A) My dad was the hired-(D) man
Everyday was a regular rat- (G) race
(A) But now I know it was part of a bigger (D) plan

Chorus:  (D) Shucking corn by hand in the (G) Fall
(A)  One cent a bushel was the (D) pay
Milking cows and slopping hogs and (G) all
(A) Worked  long and hard for a dollar a (D) day


(D) The rooms in the old house had high (G) ceilings
(A) Wall paper kept out the wind and (D) the dust
I remember with mixed  (G) feelings,
(A) Featherbeds, heavy comforts, to keep warm, (D) a must

(D) Come Winter, the sows had their (G) litter
(A) There was always a runt who was pushed (D) away
We’d bring it inside and spoon feed milk its (G)  dinner
(A) Till it was warm and strong enough  to make its (D) way
