Hickory Days

Hickory (D) nuts is  (G) what Dad called (D) them
Pecans, was the word used in (A) town
In the (D) Fall, he would (G) gather them (D) in
The best collector for (A) miles a-(D) round

In his (G) striped engineers (D) hat
And his faded Pay Day over-(A) alls
He (D) would slip in and out of (G) that timber like a (D) cat
Without any (A) effort at (D) all

He (D) decided when the (G) time was (D) right
By the color of the hickory (A) leaves
He (D) picked what he (G) needed with touch so (D) light
And brought in buckets (A) of nuts with (D) ease

He (D) would crack them at the (G) kitchen table at (D) night
Using his knife and little (A) vise
Looking (D) through the (G) shadows with a coal oil (D) light
Packing the sweet kernels in  (A) bread wraps so (D) nice

Oh, the pies and the (G) cakes that Mother (D) made
Tasted so good, flavored that a-(A) way
Thanks to (D) Dad and (G) his hickory (D) days
I can still see him (A) hunting (D) today
