GREEN AND GRAY
by Nickel Creek (written by Chris Thile)
charted by Bo Frazer BoFrazer at cfl.rr.com>
with help from Bug
notes:
for C#m, leave top 2 strings open
for B/A, move your 3 fretted A fingers up two frets, but
leave the rest open
----------------------------------------------------------

Intro = verse chords

Verse1:
A C#m
I'm in a room full of people all hanging on one person's breath.
G Bm
We would all vote him most likely to be loved to death,
      A C#m
And I hope he still wants it, but it might remind him of when
    G A
He aimed for the bulls eye and hit it nine times out of ten.

Verse2:
Then one time his hand slipped and I saw the dart sail away.
I don't know where it landed but I'm guessing between green and gray.
I thought nothing of it, but it still haunts him like a ghost.
With all eyes upon him except two that matter the most, he says:

CHORUS:
A B/A B D F#m D E
Green is the color that everyone sees all around me
A B/A B D F#m E A
Gray is the color I see around her, but she's just a blur
    D C#m Bm A
The more the crowd cheers the less I can hear
         F#m C#
And they don't really care what I play
D C#m Bm E A
Might be for her, but for now it's between green and gray.

The last E and A of the chorus aren't right, the real chords are A and
then D otherwise it's good!
-gusterSCImoe | 11/28/2002
no...it's pretty much e and a...the tab is 100% good

-lally | 12/10/2002
HA, Thanks Lally. I thought it was right!
-bugamile | 12/11/2002
The C#m on (her) is an A/C# and the E an A have to be A and D or you
could play an A/C# and D
-krazy | 12/19/2002
I totally agree with the corrections. I saw them play this live front
row and he definately plays A then D. (the A/C# sounds nice too)

In Reasons Why, the studio chord progression is:
(Capo 1)
Em D C D
Em D A C-D
However, in concert Sean and gang play:
(Capo 1)
Em D C Bm
Em D A C-D
I'm not saying they've modified "Green And Gray" already . . . I'm
just defending my defender!

With capo 2 the cords are:
Verse: G Bm F A(Major)G Bm F G
Chorus:G A G D G A D G (I don't know)
B A D G
I thought this might seem a bit esier.

We're all wrong. Nickel Creek plays any song the way they want to
play them whenever they want to. I've heard them play Nirvana in
the middle of a song that's not even remotely the same chords and it
sounded great... Why must we mince a tab up when someone is just
trying to help us out. If you find something sounds better to you,
Post It. Don't bother arguing whether it's right or not...

Hah, I hate to be one to add a string that's pertinent to the song
(I apologize ahead of time), but here's the full lyrics to Green and
Gray:

I'm in a room full of people all hanging on one person's breath.
We would all vote him most likely to be loved to death.
I hope he still wants it, but it might remind him of when
he aimed for the bulls eye and hit it nine times out of ten.

That one time his hand slipped, and I saw the dart sail away.
I don't know where it landed, but I'm guessing between green and gray.
We thought nothing of it, but it still haunts him like a ghost.
With all eyes upon him, except two that matter the most,

He says, "Green is the color everyone sees al around me.
Gray is the color I see around her, and she's just a blur."
The more the crowd cheers, the less I can hear
and they don't really care what I play. It might be for her,
But for now it's between green and gray.

We paid and we cheered, now we're gone and to us that feels right.
But for him every one of those evenings turns into a night.
With another hotel room where he lays awake to pretend
that he's doing fine with his notebook and discman for friends.

He says, "Green is the color everyone sees al around me.
Gray is the color I see around her, and she's just a blur."
Night after night what I hear, what I write fills the room
and my head starts to sway. It might be for her,
but for now it's between green and gray.

I want you to love me, he whispers, unable to speak.
And he wonders aloud why feelings so strong make the body so weak.
Then he awoke. Now he's scared to death somebody heard.
If it was you, and you know her, please don't say a word.

On the "loved to death" line I like to play an Esus: 022200 instead
of the Bm tabbed. Try it! Sounds good!

Guess what guys......the Nickel Creek books are out so stop
complaining and buy one. I can gareeeeenteeeeee you that the chords
in the books are right..100% correct. And yes it is true that nickel
creek changes chords. The chords just go along w/ the way you sing a
song...so if chris, sean or sara wants to sign it differently they
change the chords...which they often do in concert.

-bengolfn | 7/9/2003
all of you are stupid if a chord progression is what makes a song its
the backbone and if you want to play nirvana and it has the same
progression you change the key and it works. Take a lesson!

-inagauri | 7/29/2003
Just submitted the chord and lyrics for "Young" for whoever was asking for it.
-bowlingdude2000 | 1/4/2004
Am having serious SERIOUS problems playing this song... (new guitar
player self teaching UGGHH) could someone explain the best way to go
about with the chords... Ive heard 50 different ones to play and I'd
like to start off with the easiest chords for this song. Thanks!

-ccowan | 4/22/2004
the chords are A (002220), Dm (446654), G (320033), Esus (022200)
so the verse goes A Dm G Esus (cresendo on Esus) A Dm G A (decresendo on last A)
And for the chorus the chords are A, Bmaj(222444), D, Fm7 (242222), E, A
the chorus goes like this
A Bmaj D Fm7 A E
A Bmaj D Fm7 E A
It seems kind of challenging at first, but with practice it's easy
