So excited I found this! This song inspired me to play the mando! Only thing is I'm confused about the "1e&a2..." at the bottom. What does it mean? Can someone tell me? -JLee27 | 12/22/2004 | the 1e&a2 is simply a way to count the timing of eighth notes -gwokalel | 12/23/2004 | I'm so lost, someone help me find myself. -unhappy_bunny | 1/23/2005 | hmmmmmm.....JLee27 are you a retard, or at least musically retarded. If you can't hear a rhythm then maybe you should give up!! the 1e&a2e is the rhythm that chris scratches on the mando, the '&' is accented. -wgoulstone | 8/25/2005 | How do you read a mandolin tab? I can only play by ear and I wanted to try it this way to boost my skill level a little bit. So anyone wanna help me? Email me at a_b_a22@yahoo.com ... Thanks -mandolinfreak | 11/8/2005 | The 1e&a (etc) isn't being scratched on the mandolin. It's just the tempo and it applies to all the musicians, not just Thile.
The song is in 4/4, meaning there are four beats in a measure, each 1/4th the length of the whole measure. Each number is a downbeat of each measure, representing the predominant pulse felt through the song, each at a quarter mark of the measure. Each '&' the corresponding upbeat, the midpoint between downbeats, the 'and'. If the mandolin played slower you would leave the breakdown at that: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and"
However, since the song is fast the beat is further subdivided. Instead of leaving it in 8 positions per measure we split it to 16, using another syllable (in this case e or a) to represent the midpoint between the down and up beats. Thus we have the count: "1 e and a, 2 e and a, 3 e and a, 4 e and a" In this count, the down and up beats will be emphasized over their e and a midpoints, the downbeats over the upbeats, and beats 2 and 4 over 1 and 3 - resulting in the bounce you hear when you listen to the track. -seraphsfell | 12/2/2008 | thanks mon! this is great its like dead on. thank you! -rasbrandon | 5/13/2010 |
