This is one of my favorites...


She got back to the farm after a long, hot summer ride
Tied ole’ Red up to the post then headed on inside
There standing in the doorway was a figure from her past
A face without a name from a love that didn’t last
“Well you’re a sight for sore eyes,” were the first words that he spoke
And as she glared at him she said, “Is this some kind of joke?”
“The last time that I saw you, you were leaving on a train”
“In no uncertain terms you let our love just pass away”
“I didn’t need you then and I sure as hell don’t need you now”
“You waltz right in expecting me to pick up with our vows”
And with a heavy sigh and a shudder from the strain
He said these words in hopes that he could try to explain

“I really couldn’t tell you why a man does what I do”
“Just some notion I was better off without you”
“I think that where you’re going has to do with where you’re from”
“And just because the book is closed don’t mean the story’s done”

With hands set on her hips she looked him up and down again
Still living with the mem’ry of not getting over him
“I guess this means you hope I will believe the words you say”
“And act like there was no time between now and yesterday”
“If what you say is coming out from deep within your heart”
“Then I hope you’ll understand why I can’t take another start”
Now let this be a lesson about a man who had it all
The grass appears more greener in the summer than the fall
