A/C# - x42220
A/G - 3o2220
D/F# - 200232
F#m - x44222

Intro - D - G - D - A - G

(verse 1)
D G D
Sara Beth is scared to death,
                              G
To hear what the doctor will say,
     D G D
She hasn't been well, since the day that she fell,
                         D/F# G
and the bruise that just won't go away,

(pre-cho)
       F#m (or A/C#) G
So she sits and she waits with her mother and dad,
      D (Dsus4) A
And flips through an old magazine,
         F#m (or A/C#) G
Till the nurse with the sm-ile stands at the door,
    Em7 A
and says will you please come with me,

(verse 2)
 D G D
Sara Beth is scared to death,
                       A G
Cause the doctor just told her the news,
             D
Between the red cells and white,
 G D G
Somethin's not right but we're gonna take care of you,

(pre-cho)
     F#m (or A/C#) G
Six chances in Ten it won't come back again,
            D (Dsus4) A
With the therapy we're gonna try,
     F#m (or A/C#) G
It's just been approved it's the strongest there is,
    Em7 A - Asus4
I think we caught it in time,
Em7 A
Sara BEth closes her eyes,

(chorus)
A Bm A/C# D
She dreams she's dan--cin'
 F#m E D E
Around and Around without any cares
         A A/G D/F# Dm
And her very first love is holding her close,
         A E A
And the soft winds blowin' her hair,

(verse 3)
D G D
Sara Beth is scared to death,
             A G
As she sits holding her mom,
               D G D
Cause it would be a mistake for someone to take,
                           G
A girl with no hair to the prom,

(pre-chorus)
     F#m (or A/C#) G
Oh just this morning right there on her pillow,
            D (Dsus4) A
Was the cruelest of any surprise,
       F#m (or A/C#) G
And she cried as she gathered it all in her hands,
    Em7 A - Asus4
The proof that she couldn't deny,
Em7 A
Sara BEth closes her eyes,

(chorus)
A Bm A/C# D
She dreams she's dan--cin'
 F#m E D E
Around and Around without any cares
         A A/G D/F# Dm
And her very first love is holding her close,
         A E A
And the soft winds blowin' her hair,

(bridge)
       Em7 D/F#
It's quarter till seven, that boy's at the door,
         G D/F#
And her daddy ushers him in,
         Em7 D/F#
But when he takes off his cap, they all start to cry,
            G D/F#
Cause this mornin' where his hair had been,
G A
Softly she touches just skin,

(chorus)
A Bm A/C# D
They go dan--cin'
 F#m E D E
Around and Around without any cares
         A A/G D/F# Dm
And her very first true love is holding her close,
   ( NO CHORDS ) A - D - A
For a moment she ins't scared,

Thanks to jeagle82 for the correction in the bridge

what a touching song! i wish it was more than an hidden track, it made me cry
-dmack632003 | 9/13/2004
Hidden track or not,at least they gave us another beautiful and
touching song.Since the first time I saw them way back when they
first started out playing bars, these guys are amazing.
-lancejoker | 9/28/2004
I don't mean to nit-pick, but there is a
fairly big lyric error. It is not the
coolest surprise, it is the cruelest
surprise. Big difference.
-tbowers715 | 9/28/2004
you're right I didn't have the lyrics when I tab's this...
This song really hits hard when hearing it sounds like they wrote it for my daughter...
1 full year in remission!!!!! Thank the LORD!!!
-palamin0 | 9/28/2004
Can anyone help me figure out the picking pattern or tab it out,I would love to do this song for some people.

-lancejoker | 10/4/2004
it wouldn't be "cool surprise" to lose
your hair which is what he is refering to...
So it would be the "cruelest suprise"
-palamin0 | 10/24/2004
That makes sense
-qujo0301 | 10/26/2004
i agree its crulest and also in the end for
the last chorus the words are "her very
TRUE love is holding her close" Even though
it is a very touching song.
-SweetThing11028 | 10/28/2004
Superb song, and a great tab palamin! :-)
-danielcraggs | 12/10/2004
this song is awesome no matter if it is a hidden track or not. I'm just glad that they put it on their cd to touch all of us, like it did them. and it's definately Cruelest... coolest wouldn't work, that'd be sad if it said losing her hair was the coolest surprise...
-elizabethkay720 | 1/3/2005
This is a very touching song, and it made me cry the first time I heard it on the radio. Thank you, palamin0 for posting the chords for this song. It sounds great!
-rkdeerecountry7 | 1/18/2005
Fairly good job piecing that tab together. I pieced it out myself a few days ago. It is a VERY touching song! You DO have just a few mistakes in the chords used though... The second D following the A in the Chorus is not right (Don't know that name of the chord I use, but from Low E to High E the tab for the chord is o20230). Also, the majority of the bridge is not correct either. Instead of going G,D,G,D... it actually goes Em,D/F#,G,D/F#... and just is a continual walk up then back down. Other than that, it looks good! Anyone who has questions about my corrections, let me know.
-jeagle82 | 1/20/2005
I always thought that this song was in C. Does anybody else think that???????????
-pizzaman | 2/5/2005
ummmm No!!! but play it how you want and the way you want We are guides to help you with your journey:)
-palamin0 | 2/7/2005
Yeah I think instead of the D in the chorus on the word dreams it's actually a Bm chord. Other than that though great tab!
-njsinger | 2/9/2005
Also on all but the first pre-chorus instead of the Em7 chord on the last two lines of the phrases it should be a G.
-njsinger | 2/9/2005
i love this song and i tabed it out when i heard it when the cd came out. i wasnt sure of the chord name but when you play it with the capo on the second fret its like a minor when it says her very first love. when i get my guitar out today ill try to find out the chord structure for it and ill email it to ya. but yeah very very good song and good tab i can always depend on you guys.
-blugrass fan | 2/23/2005
this song does make me cry every time i hear it. i started listening to it because it could practically be about a girl i know who just found out she has lukemia. and we sang it at our prom, especially the part that says "it would be a mistake for someone to take a girl with no hair to the prom" and the girl wasn't able to come. i am going to play this song for her twin sister, and this tab really helped me learn it in a few mins. thx
-avsfan17377 | 6/18/2005
hey guys, i was just gonna let you know it is coolest surprise. I seen them in concert in Atlanta and had back stage passes and got to meet them and i asked them about it. This makes the 2nd most touching song by Rascal Flatts.....I am such a huge rascal flatts fan and love all of their music.
-cookston | 8/9/2005
hey man awesome job on this tab this song is amazing and i cant believe it was a hidden track but great job tabbing this out i love it and im going to being playing this a good bit...also it's "her very first true love it holding her close" but awesome job and thanks for doing this...later
-BradyHotard | 9/2/2005
hey awesome song it made me think about how much i need to be thankful about my life.
Jeremiah 29:11 God Bless You!!! later guys!
-jondergrl55 | 9/3/2005
doubled checked again...the chords are the way they are charted above..
-palamin0 | 9/5/2005
This song is amazing! Im just upset it took me so long to find it on the cd. if anyone know a fingerpicking pattern could you please post it for me. Thanks so much!

-willms17 | 9/12/2005
im wondering if the A/G in the last chorus is supposed to be just a G....i dunno just thought it picked up a bit there.
-FaronB15 | 9/22/2005
im wondering if the A/G in the last chorus is supposed to be just a G....it could be because "true love" is supposed to be there and I played it at True.
-FaronB15 | 9/22/2005
you can play a "G" chord there or the "A/G"
-palamin0 | 9/25/2005
To put an end to the coolest/cruelest suprise... the lyrics posted for the song on the Rascall Flatts web site are "cruelest". Nice tab for an amazing song.
-pnkflydfan | 9/28/2005
My reasoning could be wrong, but it's hard to
imagine your hair falling out being the "coolest"
surprise.

Anyway, call Rascal Flatts a "boy band", "poptry", or whatever, but anyone that hears this song and doesn't get teary-eyed has a hole where a heart should be.
-heyitskane | 10/3/2005
BTW Ken, I'm elated to hear that your daughter is
doing well. You all will continue to be in my prayers.

Great tab, too :-)
-heyitskane | 10/3/2005
this is an amazing song. i know someone who is in the same situation (with the cancer) so the first time i heard this song was almost crying (which is huge for me :-)). thanx for making this available.
-guitarplaysdrum | 10/7/2005
Man good job with the song it is great!im the strongest guy in our school and it made me cry..lol..but great job love it..
-brothertaylor | 10/7/2005
Yeah, I have this song on my ipod... and it is cruelest... but you did a outstading job.. if i knew how to play goo then i'd try.. but im still a loser begginer... but this song makes my 15 yr old country girl heart tremble lol .. there aint alot of guys that would do that.. but good job all of you :))

-ChelseaSAG | 10/9/2005
wat time is this song in??
-country.babe | 10/14/2005
where is it on the cd???

-native250 | 10/15/2005
On their newest CD it is hidden after the
last track. Just let it keep playing and it will eventually come on. They are
re-releasing this CD and Skin has a track all to itself.

-panthers | 10/20/2005
I think we all know that losing all your hair would be more cruel than cool. I guess I am the only person on the planet who thought they said "coldest of any surprise". My little sister who was 14 lost her battle with cancer in February. Playing this song is helping me to deal with some emotions. Thanks, PalaminO, for posting this tab.
-weffyb | 10/22/2005
hey does anyone know the walk thats in the chorus?
-fazole | 10/26/2005
WOW i always thought it might be "coolist of any supprise" thinking it was refuring to her growing her hair back after she lost it but i always knew it kinda didnt work...but yeah its always been my favorite song even when i got it the first day the cd came out...and was thrilled when they played it at the Smirnoff center in dallas for the first time...NOW ITS ON THE RADIO!!! the people over ruled i guess (i met these 4 times now and cant wait till the next show)they get bigger everytime i see them...its a little different than the first at billy bobs in fort worth(haha)
-jacblac101 | 11/9/2005
ive met these GUYS*....sry typed to fast for my own good(ive seen them 6 times) once a year :)
-jacblac101 | 11/9/2005
It's a good song and you were close but your tabs are way off.
-yuongblood | 11/11/2005
palimin0 is right on with his chords 99% of the time. if you think they're wrong, you must be playing some instrument other than a 6 string
-brwilliams69 | 11/11/2005
lol...
if they are wrong why are you here looking for it then...lol
And you haven't submited a thing.
-palamin0 | 12/18/2005
.
-chels3209 | 12/27/2005
I'm not sure but the way I play "without any cares" Bm A/C# D/B E sounds like it might be close. It might make it a little crowded. It's just a suggestion. Nice job on the tab though.
-kfr12ap | 12/27/2005
I think the tabs are excellent I wish i cuuld listen toa song and be able to figure out the chords just by listening to it I can only do that sometime Way to go
God Bless and ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!
-crimsontide1 | 12/28/2005
I agree with youngblood this ones way off
-Urapp | 1/12/2006
that is a very sweet song but it is very sad. my best friends and I always sing it we just can't get it out of our heads.
-coolcat0395 | 1/30/2006
I think that not only was that a sad song but, as I watch the music video I just think about that poor girl. I no that I would cry if that would have happend to me.
-coolcat0395 | 1/30/2006
The last line where "and her very first true love is holding her"... for the word (close), change to D7 =)
Oh also, the last words are (she is *un scared*)
-techbrian | 2/16/2006
OHHHHH 1000000!!! its the best tab I ever played with my bass
-Pascountrygirl | 2/19/2006
I very much agree that it is obviously "cruelest", but I want to point out that finding her own hair wouldn't be a surprise. I believe it's the guy's hair, and that's how he's asking her to prom. And to me when he says "the proof that she couldn't deny" it means that it's proof that he truly loves her. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I like to interpret it.
