 (G)I learned how to add and (C)how to subtract
How to (G)multiply and (D)divide
(G)I learned about bugs and I (C)learned about plants
And I (G)learned how to (D)read and (G)write
 (G)But my most favorite (C)class of all was my (G)last class of the (D)day
 (G)When my history teacher would (C)tell us tales of old (G)times long (D)gone (G)away
 (G)I was amazed at the way she (C)knew all the people and their (G)names and the places and the (D)dates
That’s (G)when I first learned about (C)General Lee and his (G)Thirteen (D)rebel (G)states.

G)One day she (C)came to school with a (G)big brown (D)grocery bag
 (G)She opened it up we all (C)helped her hold her up
This (G)great big (D)X-shaped (G)flag
She said "(G)Class, now only a (C)fool would tell you this (G)flag is a symbol of (D)hate
It repre(G)sents the men who (C)fought and died with (G)pride for our (D)Confederate (G)states

 (G)Your assignment tonight, I (C)want you to write, (G)I want you to pre(D)tend
That one of (G)these brave men came (C)back to life,
 (G)What would you (D)say to (G)him
Well the (G)school bell rang and I (C)thought and I thought as the (G)bus carried me across (D)town
I (G)got out my pencil and my (C)notebook pad and (G)this is what (D)I wrote (G)down

I wrote

For (G)giving your life for (C)Dixieland
 (G)Mr. Con(D)federate (G)man,

The (G)next day in (C)history class, I put my (G)paper on the teacher's (D)desk
Then she (G)called me up in front of (C)everyone, 
because she (G)said she (D)liked mine the (G)best
As (G)I walked up to the (C)head of the class, 
my teacher (G)smiled and she nodded at (D)me
Then I (G)saw a tear roll (C)down her cheek as (G)I be(D)gan to (G)read

I read

(Strum once kinda just listen to the song)
(G)I was at home reading (C)through the news, (G)just the other (D)day
When I (G)ran across my old (C)teacher's name and I (G)saw that (D)she had passed (G)away (start strumming again)
With a (G)bitter-sweet smile I looked (C)up at my wall, a wrinkled (G)paper in an old wood (D)frame
Where under(G)neath penciled words almost (C)faded away, she had (G)marked a great
