GARDEN PARTY - Ricky Nelson; 1970

Capo 2 - so it actually plays in "D"

Lick is based out of the "D" - Thanks to Cletus for the advice. THANK YOU!
Please note there are versions where Nelson recorded it a step down in "C".
So have Capo, will travel. Enjoy.

Normal Tuning

Intro - D // G // D // G // Em7, A7maj to D6 to D

Verse 1
   D G D G
I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends.
   D A Bm G A7 D
A chance to share old memories and play our old songs again.
   D G D G
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name,
   D G Em7 A7 D
But no one recognized me..., I didn't look the same.

CHORUS G A D G A D
But it's..., all right now. I learned my lesson well.
  D G D Em7 A7 D
You see you.., can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

Verse 2
People came from miles around. Everyone was there.
Yoko brought her walrus. There was magic in the air.
And over in the corner, much to my surprise,
Mr. Hughes fillin' Dylan's shoes, wearing his disguise.

But it's, all right now. I learned my lesson well.
You see you, can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

Verse 3
We played all the the old songs,
I guess that's why they came.
No one heard the music. We didn't look the same.
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me.
Then I sang a song about a Honky-Tonk, it was time to leave.

But it's, all right now. I learned my lesson well.
You see you, can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

Verse 4
Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode,
Playing guitar like a ring and a bell and lookin' like he should.
If you gotta play garden parties, I wish you a lotta lock,
But if memories were all I sang, Well, I rather drive a truck.

But it's, all right now. I learned my lesson well.
You see you, can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

G A D G A D G D Em7 A7 D
..La, la, la.....la la la la la la

This was a request via personal message.

In the verse, Nelson walks the base root of the "D" down as "3/5, 2/5, 0/5 to
2/5 instead of the A series chords. Next he walks the A down to the G - 2/5,
0/5 - 3/5. I'll post that as well.

Again - thanks to Celtus for the help. I probably owe him $10 for the lesson!
I'll tab out the intro and more pickin' eventually.- Eric.

I hoped that you would not mind, but I took a look as some of the chords for Garden Party, and breaking them down through mixing of the original song, your chords do not match.

There is no em7 in the song. Those chords are all Bm. You also need to move the G from the word Old, and back it up to to the word share.

Under the verse 1, G chord on top of recognized, is replaced quickly on the 2 count to Bm, followed by G on the word Didn't. the rest continues as normally. If you try them you will find they mix a little better.

I must admit that I cheated though as I had an old Video of Rick performing the song and was able to look at the chords that he used.
