Intro: G | D | C | D | G | D | C | D

     D G D C D G
I bet you've never heard ole Marshall Dillion say
          D C D G
Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away
     D C D
Settling down will you marry me
     G D C D
If I asked you twice and begged you pretty please
     G D C D G
She'd of said Yes in a New York minute
          D C
     They never tied the knot
         D G D
     His heart wasn't in it
             C D
Stole a kiss as he road away
     G D C D
He never hung his hat up at Kitty's place

     Chorus:
                        G | D | C |D
     I should've been a Cowboy
     D G | D | C |D
I should'be learned to rope and ride
     G D C D
wearing my six-shooter riding by pony
          G | D | C |D
     on a cattle drive
     D G | D | C |D
     Stealing the young girl's hearts
     D G | D | C |D
     Just like Gene and Roy
     D G | D | C |D
     Singing those campfire songs
                        G | D | C
     I should've been a cowboy

     Verse 2

I might of had a side kick with a funny name

running wild through the hills chasing Jesse James

Ending up on the brink of danger

Riding shotgun for the Texas Rangers

Go west yound man, haven't you been told

California's full of whisky, women and gold

Sleeping out all night beneath the Texas stars

Dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart

How is that chorus played with those chords so close together. Is it
just one strum each, I can't really hear it that well? Thanks

I've been playing the verse with it going G-D and then a chourd I don't know the name for (032030)-G
I saw him play it on a special on CMT and that's what he did it sounds more accurate this way.
The chours is the same as the verse too, but played faster. Just the way I play it.

that chord you are talking about is another way to play C

I just want to say that this song, to me, couldn't be tabbed better. Thanks

032030 is also referred to as C(add9).

Wow! Great Job on this song. It really sounds awesome!
-rsclfltts87 | 1/29/2005
kind of off subject, but 032033 is Cadd9 =), just thought I'd toss that out there
-crater88 | 5/16/2005
Cadd9 can be played 032030 or 032033, whoever called it Csus2 that is 030033 but they all sound pretty much the same. Play to your liking.

Does anyone have the strumming pattern Its hard to here with all the other instruments in the works ??
-steveo1944 | 6/20/2008
i dont know the strumming pattern but can give a tip, try strumming up and down repeatedly and then try to add your own accents to it.
-miami1024 | 6/26/2008
So I'm a beginner and don't know how to read music or know what any kind of music timing is but The strumming is very simple, Strum down once on the g and pause just long enough to change chords, then strum down (pause) up down up on the D chord, switch to the C or Cadd9 and strum down once pretty much like the G, then do the same thing going back to D. You should be able to hear the song very well if you do that, I will try to add a light scrapping of the strings coming back up inbetween the chords to give it a little fuller sound. Hope that helped you guys!

Sounds to me like how its tabbed here "his heart wasnt in it, he just stole a kiss as he rode away" pretty sure of it. good song and tab AWESOME JOB! thanks

For those of you having trouble with strumming try this. Down then down up down up. Three count measure. Strum pretty hard on the first down stroke, then lighter on the others. It will sound good.
