I have heard a couple different variations of this song as far as the order of
verses and number of choruses, etc. (I believe, for example, it's done
differently on the acoustic version they play on CMT) but this is how the song
appears on Trisha's CD "Where Your Road Leads".

Listen to the song for the timing of the snapped stops during the chorus. It
snaps exactly on the first beat of the second measure of each line. I believe
this song is usually played with Capo I (eliminate all #'s), but I also like
the way it sounds with Capo III. Enjoy!

Intro: A# G# D# A# (x4)

VERSE 1:

A# G# D# A#
After you came in late last night
                G# D# A#
You said you'd been alone
                  G# D# A#
Just needed some room to clear your mind
               G# D# A#
A little time away from home

VERSE 2:

                  G# D# A#
Told me you were out on highway nine
             G# D# A#
Down by the river bend
                   G# D# A#
But this town has ears and this town has eyes
                   G# D# A#
And a whole lot of so called friends

CHORUS:

G# D#(stop) A#
Oooooh that ain't the way I heard it
G# D#(stop) A#
Ooh that ain't the way I heard it

VERSE 3:

                          G# D# A#
Don't you think I wanna trust every word you say
                           G# D# A#
Don't you think I want to look in your eyes
             G# D# A#
And feel suspicion slip away
                      G# D# A#
When you say you got nothing to hide

CHORUS:

G# D#(stop) A#
Oooooh that ain't the way I heard it
G# D#(stop) A#
Ooh that ain't the way I heard it

VERSE 4:

Gm C
Throw me out a lifeline baby
Gm C
Offer me a grain of truth
Gm C
Treat me with a little bit of dignity
G# F
I think I deserve that much from you

VERSE 5:

 A# G# D# A#
Give me one reason for stayin' cool
                G# D# A#
Tell me they're no good liars
               G# D# A#
Don't make me play your pathetic fool
                    G# D# A#
Baby, show me that old desire

INSTRUMENTAL (Intro): A# G# D# A# (x4)

You said you'd been alone
                  G# D# A#
Just needed some room to clear your mind

That ain't the way I heard it

Continue A# G# pattern and fade
