Intro G

Verse 1
G Am
Granddaddy was a hillbilly scholar, blue collar of a man.
C9
He came from a school where you didn't need nothin'
G
If you couldn't make it with your own two hands.
G Am
He was back woods, back wards, used words like: no sir, yes
             C9 G
mam, by god, be darned and hell yeah I'm American
Adim Em
In all the years he walked this earth,
Adim Em
I swear all he did was work.
            Am7 Em7
He said the devil dreams on that idle horse
C
So listen to me squirt.

Chorus
G Am7 C9 G
Don't get too high on the bottle and get right w/ the man
G Am7
Fight your fights, find your grace and all the things that you can't change.
C9 G
And help somebody if you can

Verse2
G Am
Now Granny said son stick to your guns, if you believe in something no matter what.
C9
Cause it's better to be hated for who you are,
G
Than be loved for who your not.
G
She was five feet of concrete,
Am
NY born and raised on slick city streets
C9
She'd cold stare you down, stand her ground
G
Still kickin' and screaming at 93.
Adim Em Adim Em
I remember just how frail she looked in that hospital bed.
Am7 Em7 C
Takin' her last few breaths of life, Smiling as she said...

Chorus + And get right w/ the man

G Am7 C9 G

Am7 C9 G
I never let a cowboy make the coffee,
Am7 C9 G
Yeah, that''s what Granny always said to my Granddad.
        Am7 C9 G
He said never tell a joke that ain't that funny more than
          Am7 C9 C
once. If you want to hear God laugh tell him your plans.

Chorus + And get right w/ the man

G Am7 C9 G, G Am7 C9, G...fade

-wildwade8 | 5/12/2005
i've been looking for these chords thanks for putting them out its great !!!! and the cd is fantastic
-urban109 | 5/14/2005
When I play along with the video, most but not necessarily all of the Am's listed sound better as Am7th's. Anybody else hearing this, or is it just the tonic (pun intended) getting to me?
-crcrcrcr | 5/17/2005
Am7 sounds okay too I think, the lyrics are a bit off in the chorus I beleive. "don't get too high on the bottle, just a little sip every now and then" the line "get right with the man" comes at the end of the chorus...other than that it sounds awesome, thank you for putting it out!!!
-ballst83 | 5/25/2005
it's definitely an Am7
x02013
also, the Em is some funky version of an Em7
022033
your pinky should pull up a chair and hang out with the G played on the 3rd fret of the e string, which is played throughout the whole song... pretty standard .38 special and/or skynyrd chordings
-stratman_D | 5/26/2005
To ballst83, if you check the first comment in this sequence, you will see that my corrections took care of your lyrical concerns.
To stratman_D, I agree with your assessment. Glad that I wasn't the only one hearing the overstated tonic. Whew!
-crcrcrcr | 5/28/2005
This is an awesome song. I just know Ronnie is with them(granny n grandad) now sayin HELL YEA Boys!Nice job
-ezpickens | 5/31/2005
I watched the video and they do play the G chord as posted with the little pinky (for STRATMAN_D). I did make the corrections to Am7 and Em7 where needed (CRCRCRCR go ahead and have another sip of that tonic, you're doin' fine)! Yes, it is a great song and I am glad to see so many people are looking at the tab and playing it! Thanks, markpytko
-markpytko | 6/1/2005
markpytko, Thanks for being so receptive to the input of others.
That's what this website is all about.
-crcrcrcr | 6/2/2005
I hate to ask...cuz i'll look stupid... but can someone tab that out? Thats all I can read...but im only 13 and thats how I was taught so, thanks if you can.
-sugarXhighJRK | 6/6/2005
You may want to try an A diminished chord instead of those Am7. It sounds like the right chord to me. Where the lyric goes to "All the years he walked this earth" & "I remember just how frail she looked"
here is what i am playing
pre>
Adim XX1212
/pre>
Try that and see if you think it sounds more like the song...

-nelsonbilly | 6/15/2005
To nelsonbilly, I have tried Adim in place of the Am7 in the two places where you recommended and it sounds pretty good. I think the progression is as follows:

Adim Em
Adim Em
Am7 Em7 C

-crcrcrcr | 6/15/2005
nelsonbilly & crcrcrcr...Done. Thanks, Mark
-markpytko | 6/16/2005
I believe the use of dim's and m7th's may be more an emulation of the pedal steel chords by our guitars in renditions where there is no pedal steel available than what is probably being played by the rhythm guitar in the actual (with pedal steel) band configuration. The bottom line is that the individual guitarist's choice of chords to use in certain instances will simply be a matter of personal preference or taste.
What comes to mind is the Latin phrase, "De gustibus non diputandem est". For those of you who didn't take Latin in school [I'm so old some people swear I was around when it wasn't a dead language,LOL], its literal translation is, "about taste there is no dispute".
-crcrcrcr | 6/17/2005
Nice tab. I think its sounds good.
-mystikal1116 | 6/22/2005
good tabbing»
-clearmike | 6/27/2005
WOW! Thanks for all the input! I have corrected this tab which I believe to be perfect! Keep enjoying the song as it has obviousely touched a lot of people! Thanks, Mark
-markpytko | 7/24/2005
It's a good song and the chords sound great! Thanks
-maegan | 7/29/2005
just wondering does any one know the solo or where to find it???? thx
-ponyboy65 | 8/4/2005
love the song, and does anyone have the tab to vanzants I Cant Help Myself
-Tessa | 8/9/2005
You gotta love this place! Where else can you come to learn a redneck tune and pick up some Latin along the way. Awsome.
-guititgood | 8/13/2005
Great job. Great song. Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. I think that at the end of each line before the chorus, it should go..."so listen to me squirt" "D". End the phrase with a D chord. Seems to me it just kind of hangs there if you end it on a C. Just my two cents. Try it.
-Jim72344 | 9/13/2005
I thank you for the chords bro...being a drummer/singer and a want to be guitarist/singer I have trouble hearing the difference between 7ths 9ths dim maj's min's ect... I can play any chord u give me on paper I juat cant hear the changes sometimes....The 1 thing I do hear real well is words...And I've listened to this several times on tape before I decided to make this comment....In the chorus... ITS NOT... Don't get too high on (the) bottle... Its ..."Dont get to high on A bottle..." I think if you all listen real close you'll see this 39 yr old half deaf bar musician Can still hear lol...AND u guys r right about the pinky thing I stole it from Skynard years ago and use it in a lot of my orig songs just because its soooooo darned tastey...thanks again for the riffs guys
-DocHolliday9296 | 11/9/2005
DocHolliday, since I submitted the original correction, I have gone back and reviewed the CMT.com video several times. Although the article chosen, "a" or "the" , has little impact on the overall meaning of the phrase, I believe that you are right to the extent that "a" is the actual word used at :51 and 1:51 in the song. However, it seems that something closer to "the" occurs at 2:53. As a singer yourself, I am sure you are aware that a lot of people don't always enunciate clearly enough to determine exactly what is said. Other possibilities include that the choruses were written differently or that the "incorrect" article was sung. If someone has the liner notes for the album and the lyrics are there, please help. Doc, thanks for paying such close attention to detail and good luck with your music career there in McMinnville.
