Written by the amazing Ryan Adams when he was just a young'n in his first successful band, Whiskeytown, back in 1997. Out of the thousands he wrote, this one is at the top of the list.

The version on "Stranger's Almanac" has no capo involved. However, an early version Ryan also released when he first wrote it he played it capo 2. He put it back on his 2012 set list in which he performs it capo 3.

Standard Tuning (E A D G B e)

(C,F,G)(C,F,G)

         C F
Well I found a bunch of letters they were written for the fella
      G
Who broke your Momma's heart
           C F G
And the envelope folds smelled of her ancient perfume
F G
I'll bet she didn't know
          C /B Am F G
How to respond before the blankets of snow caught him out wandering alone
                  C
With no place to go

(F,C)

F G
And there was stars in the sky
             C /B Am G
There were houses on the hill and there were bottles of pills
          F G C
That were easy to buy, to keep her warm from the oncoming storm

         C F G
Well I found them in the north-west corner of the attic in a box

labeled 'Tinsel and Lights'
        C F G
didn't know what I was looking, maybe just a blanket or artifacts

  F G
Eisenhower sent him to war
               C /B Am G F
he kept her picture in his pocket that was closest to his heart and when he hit
        G C (F/C)
shore, must of been a target for the gunman

F G
There were stars in the sky
             C /B Am G
And there were bunkers on the hill and there were caskets to fill
      F G C (F/C)
Where he would lie, shrouded in the red, white and blue with the stripes

F G
There was stars in the sky
             C /B Am G
There were houses on the hill and there were bottles of pills
          F G C
That were easy to buy, to keep her warm from the oncoming storm
